Reflection

Reflection EDT 511 is, without a doubt, the most rewarding class I have taken at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. I feel as though I can take the knowledge learned and apply it both personally and professionally. EDT 511 has given me the confidence to experiment with new software programs, the desire to keep abreast of emerging technology, and the motivation to actively seek out different ways to use technology to support learning opportunities for students.

I have significantly enhanced my technology skills, and it feels great to finally become part of our technology driven society. I am at the point where not only do I understand the technology lingo when referenced elsewhere, but get excited and want to contribute to the conversation, as well. I have shown my classroom projects to students, teachers, administrators, family, and friends and have inspired many of them to take courses such as EDT 511. In fact, our media specialist has expressed interest in taking EDT 511 with Professor Duran as part of her continuing education. I have gone from Microsoft Word to Inspiration, Microsoft PowerPoint, Weebly, Wikispaces, Blogger, Audacity, Sony Vegas, and Adobe Dreamweaver, from using hyperlinks to creating hyperlinks, from e-mail to discussion boards, and from navigating the Web to publishing on the Web.

Using the VLT to communicate with Professor Duran and other students was a great way to help each other answer questions, discuss important topics, and give and receive feedback. It is a great communication tool. With the assignments and grades posted on the VLT, I knew exactly where I stood in the class. Thus, communication on the VLT worked extremely well for EDT 511. The software programs were easy to understand and use, especially for people with basic technology skills.

Perhaps the only thing that didn't work that well for me was using NVU. Transferring files back and forth from school to home was frustrating. Also, I preferred the template designs offered by Weebly to NVU

My only regret with EDT 511 is that it went by too quickly. I cannot think of anything I would change. The content and structure was appropriate for the amount of time given for the course. The three hour time block worked very well for me; I enjoyed being introduced to the material, then having time to work with the software while it was fresh in my mind.

My technology adventure has just begun. I look forward to taking more technology courses, eventually working towards a technology endorsement. Communicating with my students through tools such as the VLT is something I hope to accomplish; therefore, I need become familiar with various tools of communication to see which best serves the intended purpose. I believe it is important for me to continue working on file management skills and exploring new technologies as a self-learner, as well. EDT511 has paved the way for a life-long learning experience.
